Marvin Kalb’s latest book, Enemy of the People: Trump’s War on the Press, the New McCarthyism, and the Threat to American Democracy, explains why he believes we should fear for the future of American democracy because of the unrelenting attacks by the Trump administration on the press. Kalb writes that, shortly after assuming office in January 2017, President Donald Trump accused the press of being an “enemy of the American people.” Attacks on the media had been a hallmark of Trump’s presidential campaign, but this charge marked a dramatic turning point: language like this ventured into dangerous territory. Historically, the press has been a bulwark in the defense of democracy. Today, journalism has been severely weakened, but a virile, strong press is necessary to keep democracy out of peril.

Marvin L. Kalb is an American journalist. He was the founding director of the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy and Edward R. Murrow Professor of Press and Public Policy from 1987 to 1999. He is currently a James Clark Welling Fellow at The George Washington University and a member of the Atlantic Community Advisory Board. Mr. Kalb spent 30 years as an award-winning reporter for CBS and NBC News. At NBC, he was chief Diplomatic Correspondent and host of Meet the Press.
