DACOR: Theology and the Hollowing Out of Foreign Service Disciplines

Start Date/Time:
Thursday, March 29, 2018 - 08:00
End Date/Time:
Thursday, March 29, 2018 - 09:30
Description:

In addition to the hollowing out of the Foreign Service's ranks, especially its senior ones, under the Trump administration, its disciplines, notably its insistence on getting the facts - all of them - exactly right and on rigorous analysis, are similarly threatened amid today's "alternative facts" and "fake news." Rev. Theodore Lewis will lead a consideration of how theology is uniquely equipped to resist this latter hollowing out, not only by highlighting it but also by providing a firm basis for resisting it. Rev. Lewis is an Anglican priest and retired FSO. In the Foreign Service, he had postings in Vietnam and Pakistan. His experience of churches there led him to seminary. Following ordination and parish ministry, he rejoined the Service and was posted in Vietnam, the DR Congo, Korea and Laos, serving in the embassy during the week, but in the local Anglican church on Sundays. He is now resident theologian at All Saints' Church, Chevy Chase. This event costs $5 and includes coffee/tea & cookies.
