DACOR: Xi Jinping, China's Rise and Leadership in Asia

Start Date/Time:
Friday, February 5, 2016 - 10:00
End Date/Time:
Friday, February 5, 2016 - 12:00
Description:

The powerful image of China's rise fostered by Xi Jinping and his government fades in the face of power realities and adverse circumstances at home and abroad that encumber China's ascendance and belie those seeing a major power shift in the Asian order. Careful examination of the actual strengths and weaknesses of China's position in Asia--the focal point of Chinese foreign policy concerns--shows numerous constraints that on balance have strengthened as the seemingly powerful Chinese president has pursued bold initiatives adverse to neighbors and the United States in a vaguely defined self-absorbed quest for revival of national power and greatness known as "the China Dream." Dr. Sutter is Professor of Practice of International Affairs at the Elliott School and directs the ESIA program of Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs. He has taught there since 2011 and previously taught for 10 years at Georgetown's School of Foreign Service and over 30 years part time at a number of Universities. He has published 21 books and hundreds of articles and government reports on China, Asia and the U.S. This event costs $25. (Rescheduled from January 27.)
