Welcometo the new IBB page on the AFSA website.
Al Pessin has been the IBB Representative on the AFSA Governing Board since 2006. From 2007-09, he also served as the Governing Board’s representative on the Foreign Service Journal Editorial Board. Al is a career VOA foreign correspondent, and has served in Hong Kong, Islamabad, Beijing, Jerusalem and London. His domestic tours have included VOA’s headquarters in Washington, and its bureaus in New York, at the White House and at the Pentagon, his current assignment. Al was expelled from China under martial law regulations after the Tiananmen massacre in 1989 for 'illegal news gathering' and 'fomenting counter-revolutionary rebellion.' That year, he won VOA's "Outstanding Employee of the Year" award, a Gold Medal at the International Radio Festival of New York and was named "Communicator of the Year" by the National Association of Government Communicators. He has also won numerous other VOA awards, including one in 2006 for his Pentagon coverage. Al also teaches Covering Conflicts, Terrorism and National Security, a graduate course at the Washington campus of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, his alma mater.
Al can be reached at apessin@voanews.com.
