oats rest peacefully in the still of morning on Pokhara Lake in Pokhara, Nepal. The country’s

second-largest city, Pokhara is located 200 miles west of Kathmandu in the shadow of the

magnificent Annapurna Range that contains three of the 10 highest mountains in the world.

This photo was taken on March 12, 2015. In less than two months, the country would be

rocked by an earthquake that claimed more than 8,000 lives.

John F. Krotzer is a Foreign Serivce family member and, most recently, the community liaison officer at Con-

sulate Mumbai. He and his family are heading to Beijing for their next posting. For this photo he used a Nikon
