Don’t Let Good Work Go Unnoticed: Nominations for 2013
AFSA Awards for Exemplary Performance Now Accepted

AFSA encourages all mem-
bers of the Foreign Service
community to consider
nominating a deserving col-
league or family member for
one of the association’s three
annual awards for exemplary
performance. Deadline for
nominations is Feb. 28.
AFSA Performance
Awards honor Foreign Ser-
vice employees and family
members alike.
The
Nelson B. Delavan
Award,
for a Foreign Service
ofce management specialist
who has made a signifcant
contribution to post or ofce
efectiveness and morale
beyond the framework of his
or her job responsibilities.
The 2012 winner was James
Velez, serving in Mazar-e-
Sharif.
The
M. Juanita Guess
Award,
for a community liai-
son ofcer who has demon-
strated outstanding leader-
ship, dedication, initiative or
imagination in assisting the
families of Americans serving
at an overseas post. The 2012
winner was Sara Hurst Butler,
serving in Port-au-Prince.
The
Avis Bohlen Award,
for a Foreign Service eli-
gible family member whose
relations with the American
and foreign communities at
post have done the most to
advance the interests of the
United States. The 2012 win-
ner was Leila Gupta, serving
in Nairobi.
Winners are chosen by
panels of judges from within
the Foreign Service com-
munity. All winners will be
honored at AFSA’s awards
ceremony held in late June
2013, in the Department of
State’s Benjamin Franklin
Diplomatic Reception Room.
Each winner will receive a
cash prize of $2,500.
