Omar Sykes Scholarship

AFSA is collecting tax-deductible contributions in memory of Omar Sykes through the AFSA Scholarship Fund to establish an undergraduate financial aid scholarship in his name for a child of a Foreign Service employee attending a Historically Black College or University (HBCU).

Omar Sykes, the son Adam Sykes of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and Sherry Zalika Sykes who is currently serving in Maputo, Mozambique, passed away on July 4, 2013. Omar was a rising senior at the Howard University School of Business. (Update, October 2013: An arrest has been made in Omar's killing.)

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to establish a scholarship in Omar’s name. Donations can be made via credit card by clicking on the link below. In addition, one can send a check payable to the “AFSA Scholarship Fund” (writing in the memo field, “Omar Sykes”) to the American Foreign Service Association (AFSA) Scholarship Program, 2101 E Street NW, Washington, DC 20037.
