Description:

As part of our national outreach efforts to elevate the profile of diplomacy and development, AFSA will present the Eighth Annual Caroline and Ambassador Charles Adair Memorial Lecture, which kicks off the fall semester at American University’s School of International Service (SIS). The series is generously endowed by former AFSA president Marshall Adair through a perpetual gift to AFSA’s Fund for American Diplomacy in honor of his parents. The lecture will take place on Wednesday, August 27, at 3:00 p.m. at the Kay Spiritual Life Center on American University's campus in Washington, D.C.

This year’s distinguished speaker, Ambassador Thomas Miller, will address the topic of “The Nexus Between Diplomacy and Development,” followed by a question and answer period. Ambassador Miller was a career Foreign Service Officer who served as U.S. Ambassador to Greece and Bosnia and Herzegovina. During his 29-year tenure with the Department of State, he also held the titles of Special Cyprus Coordinator at the rank of Ambassador, Deputy Chief of Mission for Greece, Director of the Office of Israeli and Palestinian Affairs, and Director of the Office of North African Affairs. He now serves as the President and CEO of the International Executive Service Corps.

AFSA members are welcome to attend, though seating is somewhat limited. Please arrive no later than 2:45 p.m., and look for the “Reserved” section near the front of the Kay Spiritual Life Center, on the main AU campus. There is moderate-fee parking in nearby parking lots. Please email commintern@afsa.org if you would like to attend.
