Description:

This is the first in what we hope will be a series of Book Discussions with USAID Authors (drawn from the extensive bibliography recently assembled by the USAID Alumni Association - see http://www.usaidalumni.org/bibliography-of-usaid-authors).  This event is co-sponsored by UAA and USAID.

Recently appointed as the USAID Mission Director to India, Amb. Jonathan Addleton will discuss challenges and approaches toward becoming an author while also serving as a USAID Foreign Service officer.

Addleton's books include Some Far and Distant PlaceUndermining the Center, and Mongolia and the United States: A Diplomatic History. He has also written for a variety of publications including Ambassadors Review, Asian Affairs, Asian Survey and The Foreign Service Journal

A five-time USAID Mission Director (India, Pakistan, Cambodia, Mongolia and Central Asia), he also served as US Ambassador to Mongolia (2009-2012); USAID Representative to the European Union (2007-2009); and Senior Civilian Representative for Southern Afghanistan in Kandahar (2012-2013). Prior to joining USAID in March 1984, he worked briefly at the World Bank, Macon Telegraph and Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Last year he received the American Foreign Service Association's Christian A. Herter Award for intellectual courage and constructive dissent.  He has also received an Outstanding Civilian Service Medal from the US Army; ISAF Service Medal from NATO; Distinguished Honor Award from USAID; and Polar Star, Mongolia's highest civilian honor, from the President of Mongolia.  Earlier in his career he was a Bread Loaf Fellow at Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT and received the Faricy Writing Prize from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. Please RSVP to jpielemeie@aol.com.
