The Foreign Service Online Community

AFSA is pleased to offer the Foreign Service Online Community as a benefit to members of the Foreign Service community.

Our online community is what we make of it. AFSA is committed to providing an online space where members can get in touch with each other, share ideas, interesting articles, professional insights, retirement questions and tips, or any other related content that is constructive and of general interest. Read the latest think tank article on the state of diplomacy? You can share your perspective. Going to travel to Istanbul? A user can post this kind of information on the site and potentially get in touch with colleagues for local recommendations or maybe even a chance to meet for coffee. The Foreign Service community is unique in its shared identity, experiences, and richness. We hope that our online community will reinforce and sustain our professional bonds. Please make sure to read the code of conduct carefully.

We hope you’ll take a moment to sign up and encourage your friends and colleagues to do the same. The more voices we have, the richer the conversation!

How to Join the Foreign Service Online Community

To join the Foreign Service Online Community, please follow the instructions below. All members, whether retired or active duty, are welcomed and encouraged to join.

Step 1: To join, please send an email to

  • You will receive an automated email from Yahoo Groups asking you to confirm your request to join the group. You should receive this email within minutes. If you do not receive it, please check your spam or junk folder.
  • You will be required to confirm your request in order to join the group. The email from Yahoo outlines two ways to do this:
    • The first option is the simplest and highly preferred. Simply reply to the Yahoo automated email and press ‘send’ to confirm your request to join the group.
    • The second option is less optimal and requires much more detail. Click on the link provided in the automated email, which will take you to the group homepage to confirm your request. Please note that from that page you will see a form which you MUST fill out in order to confirm your request to join the group. If you choose this method you may be asked to provide your email address. If you don’t have a Yahoo email address, you can either sign up for one OR there is a link within the sign-up form which says, “I’d rather use my own email address”.

Step 2: Once you have requested to join AND confirmed your request (per the steps outlined above), you will receive an email from the group moderator (fsonlinecommunity Moderator) with instructions on how to post a message, contact the moderator, and even unsubscribe if you find need to.

You do not need a Yahoo email address to join the FS Online Community. If you are taken to a “sign in” screen, and would like to use an email address other than Yahoo, please select the link, “Don't have an account? Sign up”. On the sign-up form on the next screen you will see a link which says, “I’d rather use my own email address”. Clicking on this link will allow you to use an email address other than Yahoo.
